Kate Greenaway

The Original Art of Kate Greenaway
Kate Greenaway (1846-1901)was born in Hoxton, East London. Her father, John Greenaway, was an engraver to The Illustrated London News. She studied art at Finsbury, Heatherley’s and Slade and exhibited her children's’ portraits at the Royal Academy in 1877. This style attracted the attention of Edmund Evans and her first solo ‘picture book’, Under the Window, was published in 1879.

Miss Greenaway had an almost photographic memory and she recreated many of her childhood experiences through her art. She designed and stitched the elaborate dresses and hats worn by her child models, placing them in the foreground of garden designs and settings from her recollections.

Her enduring success is due to the appeal throughout Europe, North America and the Far East of her simple lines and delicate use of colour.

Books illustrated include: Aunt Louisa’s Nursery Favourite, Diamonds and Toads, Puck and Blossom, Fairy Gifts (a Wallet of Wonders), Seven Birthdays, Under the Window,
Under the Window, The ‘Little Folks’ Painting Book, A Day in a Child’s Life, Marigold
Garden, Kate Greenaway’s Album, A Apple Pie, Queen Victoria’s Jubilee Garland,
